A hashtag is simply a term or phrase that is used to direct a person to a topic they are interested in. It is created by using the # symbol (also known as the pound sign) and setting it before the keyword you want others to find ie: #FreakyFriday.
The pound symbol is a common key on most keyboards and most social network sites use this system to direct users to posts they may be interested in finding. When used correctly, hashtags are a valuable tool for those who use social media websites for promotion.
I didn't learn the value of using hashtags in my early years online, but I certainly acknowledge their significance today. If you want to reach people outside your circle of connections, hashtagging is definitely the aprropriate thing to do. Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, X (formally known as Twitter) and many other sites use hash tagged words to encourage targeted traffic to those posts.
If you use X for promotion, one of the first things you should do before you post is to glance to the right-hand side of your home page. This is where you will see the trends section, which is a list of the hashtags that are popular that day with those currently visiting the X website. Using these keyword terms in your posts can greatly help to increase your tweet's visibility. It is interesting to note that there are several types of trending hashtags on X, which means that the Trending List is constantly changing making it important to check the list's contents each day. Current news and events change daily, so occasionally you may find that one of your posts will feed in ideally with a current conversation. This is when hash tagging can increase your odds of a viral post.
My favorite hashtags to use are those that are evergreen in content. These daily trends carry titles such as #ThrowbackThursday and #FridayFeeling, these tend to revolve in a continuous circle to reappear on a specific day each week. I'll provide a list of the popular ones that I participate in a little further along, so keep reading. If you are not sure what type of posts are suitable for a specific tag or if you want to see what the conversation looks like, simply click on one of the phrases in the Trending List and scroll through the posts. It's a great way to get a feel for the topics of interest in that day's discussion. It can also give you some pretty good ideas on how to phrase your post.
Whether you are posting on Facebook, X, Reddit, Pinterest or Instagram apply one to 5 hashtags to your posts, memes, videos, and photos. When you use too many hashtags on your post your message tends to get lost among the links.
When you are posting an item online or reposting a great meme that you have found be sure to use appropriate hashtags to ensure that your messages winds up on a thread that is being viewed by an abundance of visitors. You can post memes, gifs, images, blurbs, memes or videos, that fit in with the theme of the tag.
- #Monday: Always a common hashtag for the first workday of the week.
- #MotivationalMonday: If you have encouraging thoughts to share, then they will fit perfectly with this tag. I love posting on this topic thread. I tend to write quite often on a positive note, so this tag is ideal for many of my articles.
- #MondayMorning: Perfect for those who hate Mondays but also for breakfast or news theme posts. I'm sure Garfield would love this one. These posts can often be quite sarcastically humorous, so they're also a good place to perk up a gloomy mood.
- #MondayBlues: Another thread for those who hate Mondays but also for those individuals whose weekend didn't work out quite as planned.
- #MindfulMonday: Encouraging thoughts to start the week. Post anything positive. There are many other Monday hashtags, but these few are my favourites.
How to Find More Daily Tags: If you want to see what is trending on each weekday, do a search on your home page. Just as Google search will feed in suggested topics in its search box, so will most social media websites feed in suggested tags for you to pick up on. Add the # in front of the day of the week you are looking for trending topics on ie, #Monday. Give it a try it and see what pops up.
What truly makes recurring hashtag threads so appealing is the fact that they garner a loyal audience. Readers will return each week to see what is new on their favourite topics so if you are sharing to their tags then you are pretty much guaranteed to have an audience already in place. All you have to do is show up and post something interesting enough to grab their attention.
- #Tuesday is the simplest keyword for this day of this week but also likely one of the most common.
- #TuesdayMotivation: Much the same as the MotivationalMonday counterpart this tag is for posting cheerful inspiration or motivational blurbs, images, links, and gifs. Anything that you think will be encouraging to others is appropriate to post on this topic.
- #TuesdayThoughts: Go wild and say what is on your mind. Anything goes.
- #TuesdayTreat: This is generally a food theme thread with people posting images of what they are having for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Recipes, restaurant reviews, or anything else treat related is acceptable. If you received a gift or treated yourself to a relaxing spa day that will also fit ideally under this tag too.
- #TuesdayTrivia: Obviously this is just as the name states. It is a place for any trivia or curiosity can be shared. Scientific, nature, food, or fantasy for those with a curious nature this is the ideal thread to visit or post.
It is important to note that there are many popular #hashtags that trend daily on the various social networking sites. #foodiechats #picoftheday #globalwarming and #economy are just a few. If you are looking for a tag for a specific topic, do a search to see what keywords are trending in that area.
- #Wednesday
- #WednesdayMotivation: By now you may be noticing that this motivational hashtag is a recurring daily trend. It appears each day of the week and is there to help you and others have a super fantastic week. Bring your encouraging thoughts to others or visit the thread to lift your mood.
- #WednesdayWisdom: This is where you get to post your advice to others or share links that you have found helpful. You can also expect to get quite a wealth of advice and opinion from this thread. - #WellnessWednesday: It's all about health. Share anything health and wellness themed here. #WednesdayThoughts: As in all the thought threads that appear each day this is a tag that is pretty much anything goes. You get to say what is on your mind or read what others are feeling or doing as they post.
- #WednesdayWins: This is quite a unique tag in that it posts two distinct themes within it. 1) Contests and 2) Those who have won at something and are share their good news. If something fantastic has happened to you then this is the place to share it. Spotted a great contest online? Well you can share that here as well.
Don't Forget Monthly Hashtags: In addition to regular daily hashtags attracting readers, it is important to note that each month is also tagged. Although posts range over a broader theme, these threads also receive quite a fair share of readers, ie: #MarchMadness.
I'm not sure if it is just me or if people really are a little grouchier on Thursdays but I find that this is one day of the week when posts seem angry, weary, or just a wee little bit gloomier than usual. Perhaps the work week is wearing on folks. I'm not sure what it is but you'll likely see what I mean when you check out the day's hash tagged threads.
- #Thursday
- #ThrowbackThursday: This tagged thread is a flash back into the past. Here you can find or post any image, post, link, or gif reminiscent of the past. It's a great place to reflect on past events either personal, political, vintage, or news worthy.
- #ThursdayThoughts or #ThursdayThought: Once again a thread to post your feelings and thoughts on any topic important to you. Anything goes so feel free to go wild here. If you don't know what to share then take a few minutes to read through the thread to see what others are sharing.
- #ThursdayFeeling: I have found this hashtag to be quite a personal one. Posts generally relate to how a person is emotionally dealing with current situations occurring in their life. It is a good place to share a short vent when you are having one of those days or another good thread to offer motivational / inspirational advice on.
- #ThankfulThursday: This is another good news thread as it is generally a posting of people saying thank you to others. There are also posts of reasons why a person or animal is feeling thankful ie: rescue animals enjoying their new lives. Have a thank you to share? This would be the keyword to use.
Friday on social media is generally quite a celebratory day and it shows on the popular social media threads for this day. The weekend is around the corner and people are eager to share their plans and ideas for their upcoming days off. There also tends to be an uplifting of spirits in comparison to the reflective Thursday threads.
- #Friday
- #FridayFun, #FunFriday or #FridayFunny: Exactly as it sounds. If you have something fun to share today is the day to do it. Cartoons, jokes, good news, and accomplishments. Friday is a fun day and the posts reflect this upbeat mood. If you want to cheer up or are just in the mood to find a few positive posts then Facebook, Pinterest, or X is the place to be.
- #FashionFriday: Displaying fashions of all types I was truly surprised by the number of humorous posts also showing up in this thread (it has got to be a Friday thing). Got a new outfit or hairstyle? Show it off.
- #FridayFeeling, #FridayFeelings and #FridayFeels: These tags all lead to quite similar content so which one you decide to use is entirely up to you. On these hashtags posts are generally on any topic or opinion that is of personal interest to yourself.
- #FridayForum: News, politics, recognition, and promotion are the themes for this keyword. It is exactly what it hints it is, a Friday forum to discuss or promote important issues.
- #FridayReads: Literary lovers this one is for you. It is all things involving the written word. Writers, book reviews, discussion, cartoons, if you can read it then it belongs in this thread.
- #FlashbackFriday: Post anything retro. It's a quick peek into past events and memories. Generally a little more upbeat than #ThrowbackThursday
